1798<S$1> Close Date. B-28, BB-118, R.3. AU53 NGC. Digit 8 out of position, high and leaning slightly right; Point of leaf below right half of C. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state I. An outstanding example of this early die state as the coin retains ample luster and a good strike. No surface problems detract, although we note a tiny pit on Liberty's cheek just behind her mouth which hallmarks this coin, as well as a minor pin scratch up from the inside point of the last star toward Liberty's chin. On the reverse there is a tiny rim bruise or two over ITE. Bright silver in color with splashes of blue and rose-gold primarily on the reverse.
The old workhorse obverse die was pressed into more service with this new reverse die. Note on the obverse that there are three tiny bars clustered just left of the inside point of star twelve and another thin bar between stars ten and eleven. The obverse cracks starting below the date are well developed, with the left crack extending up into Liberty's hair ribbons, and a faint crack through ERTY and the eighth star. On the reverse, note that the N of UNITED is punched over an erroneous I, which is quite clear with the serif of the I extending right of the diagonal of the N at the top. No reverse die cracks are seen, but some of the reverse letters are bifurcated with raised portions at the base serifs.
Ex: M. H. Bolender, K. P. Austin, Baldenhofer, Superior's Jacque and A.
