1798 S$1 Large Eagle AU50 NGC.
1798 S$1 Large Eagle AU50 NGC.<p>B-24, BB-124. R.2. Die State IV or later. This is the so-called "Blundered Stars Reverse" variety. The obverse die was only used in striking this die marriage. One glance at the obverse of this coin and one immediately can tell why--the obverse die is virtually shattered, and is the latest die state this cataloger has ever observed or noted. There is a die crack running from the field under the Y of LIBERTY through all of stars on the right of the obverse, continuing into the bust of Liberty just above the drapery. The crack from star 1 down along the border continues in the denticles under the date and beyond! The crack from Liberty's lower hair curl through the top of the 798 of the date to the border has now traveled through the denticles, under Liberty's drapery, and now intersects the heavy crack from the rim to star 12, and also branches from the denticles by star 13 back to Liberty's drapery. The reverse of this coin shows only 8 stars. This is likely due to the shattering of the die on the lower right of the obverse (which is opposite this area). This reverse die was first used to strike 1798 B-25, BB-123, then B-24, BB-124. The die was used one more time, to strike the reverse of the 1799 B-15, BB-112 Dollar, the only 1799 Dollar struck with a 1798 reverse die. The surfaces show no mentionable abrasions and each side is covered with streaky gray-lilac and golden toning. Needless to say, this is a great coin for the early dollar specialist. From the Michael Hering Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
