1798<S$1> Large Eagle, 10 Arrows AU Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS. B-21, BB-107, R.4. Inexplicably in an NCS holder labeled "1798 Small Eagle 13 Stars BB-82." The obverse die, which was combined with three different reverse dies to form an equal number of varieties, is instantly recognized by a small raised die dot or lump over the left side of the 9 in the date. From the usually seen die state with minor reverse die cracks. Additional faint obverse die cracks are similar to those discussed in the Bowers-Borckardt reference. Although there is no question that this early dollar has been cleaned, we believe that it was properly conserved, and that the NCS phrase of improper cleaning is quite harsh. Nearly full luster remains with pleasing light champagne color and slightly deeper gold toning.
From The Thomas Wolfe Collection, Part One.
