1798<S$1> 10 Arrows. B-17, BB-101, R.4--Bent, Improperly Cleaned, Bent--NCS. AU Details. Wide date, 17 close, 8 touches bust; Line star pattern, five vertical shield lines, 10 arrows. Reiver die state c. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. This is the Reiver plate coin for the obverse and reverse of this variety. This one has some surface problems which include areas which were buffed and these now show faint parallel hairlines, particularly near the rims of the obverse and reverse. The coin may be bent in the right obverse field, but the bending is so slight that it is not readily apparent. On the positive side, Liberty's hair is bold and well defined, and this coin clearly did not circulate very long. A later obverse die state, with many of the dentils lapped severely on the left and right side. An additional obverse crack now crosses the primary die crack through the upper two points of the first star to Liberty's curl near the base of her neck. The reverse shows a few central and peripheral adjustment marks. Identifiable by a small field nick below Liberty's chin and a minor planchet flaw on the rim past the D of UNITED. Apparently this variety was struck fairly early in the year, as the reverse die was also paired with a Knobbed 9 obverse. In strong demand as few varieties have the five shield stripes on the reverse.
Ex: Rushel (January, 1993). Envelope Included.
