1798. Small eagle, 15 stars on obverse. B-2, BB-81, Rarity 3. NGC graded AU-53. Light grey toning with deeper gray accents in the fields and lighter on the devices. The strike is sharp throughout particularly on Libertys hiar curls and the eagles wings. The surfaces are pleasing with minimal signs of handling and no distracting marks. This is an important major variety issue as well as a short lived type coin, with the Small Eagle reverse design and paired with the only 15 star obverse die used in 1798. Curiously the 15 star count should have been retired in 1796, when Tennessee joined the Union in June of 1796 as the sixteenth state, and then 16 stars were proper. Thus it is believed that this obverse die was engraved in early 1796, then finally pressed into service in 1798. The reverse die shows the delicate Small Letter design, which was used every year since 1795 to coin at least one die pairing of silver dollars. This appearance in 1798 was its last appearance and use and the Heraldic Eagle design was adopted soon after this coin was struck. Precious few of these are found in such high technical grade, and this coin would make a wise selection by any advanced collector. Better than average strike. Pop 2; 2 finer for the variety. 1 in 60, 1 in 63. Estimated Value 18,000 - UP
