1798 Draped Bust Cent. Reverse of 1796. VG7
Slightly sharper with several patches of very fine porosity scattered about the both sides. The only verdigris is a bit of microscopic carbon dusted at LI in LIBERTY. Rather glossy chocolate and steel brown with matte surfaces in the roughened areas. A loop of dark olive toning shows at the bottom of the wreath. The obverse is considerably sharper than the obverse, as always with this variety. The date is bold and LIBERTY is strong. The reverse legends are mostly clear but UNITED and OF are faint at best. The single leaves at the top of the wreath (the major feature of the reverse of 1796) are clear. LDS, Breen state IV. This is the cent used in the grading challenge conducted at the 2005 EAC Convention. The average net grade assigned by the EAC grading experts was VG8 for this cent, and the surfaces were judged to be average. Not bad for a very rare variety that almost always comes with significant defects and poor surfaces.
