1798/97 10C 13 Stars on Reverse MS62 PCGS. JR-2, R.6. The scarcest variety of the year, this is a very distinctive overdate with the 8 small and punched over a plain 7 underdigit. We have handled only a couple other examples of this rare variety in the past five years, the last being a VF piece. The reverse stars on this variety are peculiarly arranged in a 5-6-1-1 pattern, quite unlike any other such arrangement we can remember on any other early U.S. coin. This is undoubtedly the finest example known for the variety, the only other piece that could possibly challenge it is the Lovejoy specimen which was graded Brilliant Uncirculated by Stack's in the sale of his collection in 1990. The surfaces have a muted silver-gray patina overall with deeper olive-green and russet color surrounding the devices and peripheries. A bit softly struck in the centers, there are a few abrasions that are consistent with the grade and heavy die clashing in the obverse fields. An exceptional opportunity for the Early Dime specialist. Population: 1 in 62, none finer by either service (1/05). Lot:6174
