1798/97<10C> 13 Stars on Reverse AU50 NGC. JR-2, R.6. The scarcest variety of the year, this is a very distinctive overdate with the 8 small and punched over a large, plain 7 underdigit. In the past, we have sold less than 6 other examples in all grades. The reverse stars on this variety are peculiarly arranged in a 5-6-1-1 pattern, quite unlike any other such arrangement we can remember on any other early U.S. coin. This is an exceptionally high grade for the variety. The surfaces have slightly muted silver-gray patina overall with hints of rose patina as the coin turns under a light. A bit softly struck in the centers, there are a few abrasions that are consistent with the grade and heavy die clashing in the obverse fields. One scratch mark parallels Liberty's bust to 5 o'clock on the obverse rim, this serving as a future identifier. An exceptional opportunity for the Bust Dime specialist.
