E in AMERICA first inverted. The obverse appears on S-152. The reverse appears on S-152 and NC-1.<BR><B><BR>Surfaces.</B></I> Delightful olive and reddish-brown surfaces with a few splashes of maroon patina and iridescent toning on each side. Both sides have a few fine diagonal hairlines that discount the grade slightly Numerous small pit marks on each side are believed to be remnants from the original planchet strip. Double Flange Edge.<BR><B><BR>Die State II. </B></I>The obverse has a straight die crack from the border to hair below the ribbon.<BR><B><BR>Appearances. </B></I>The obverse and reverse are illustrated in Clapp and in Breen's <I>Large Cent Encyclopedia</B></I>. The obverse is illustrated in <I>Early American Cents</B></I>.<BR><BR><B>Census. </B></I>Bland and Noyes agree that this piece is the fourth finest S-152, and each grade the coin XF40.<BR><BR><B>Commentary. </B></I>The three overdate varieties, Sheldon's Group 2, are subject to strong demand from major variety and date collectors. Though the commonest of the three, S-152 is elusive, despite its rating of Rarity-2. Only about a dozen examples of all three varieties grade better than VF.<BR><BR><B>Provenance. </B></I><I>Howard R. Newcomb (J.C.
