1798/7 $10 9x4 Stars MS63 NGC.
1798/7 $10 9x4 Stars MS63 NGC. Breen-6836, B. 1-A, Taraszka-9, R.4. A crisply struck Eagle, the bust of Liberty and the eagle's wings and shield offer exquisite definition. The eagle's breast and a couple of stars are not completely brought up, but this does not affect the eye appeal, which is further aided by the absence of adjustment marks that often frequent early Federal gold. The upright of the underdigit 7 is apparent within the lower loop of the 8, and the upper serif of the 7 looms above the upper loop of the 8. Three spindly mint-made die cracks (through L and R in LIBERTY and below the mouth) intersect northwest of Liberty's ear. Neither side has any individually relevant handling marks, and the dies are slightly rotated counterclockwise. Only two die marriages of 1798 Eagles are known. These share a common reverse, but since the obverse star arrangement significantly differs, both are separately collected Guide Book varieties. Breen 1-A crowds nine stars behind Liberty's cap and features LIBERTY and the final four stars after the cap. Breen 2-A takes a more balanced design approach, with seven stars behind LIBERTY and six afterwards. The large bust of Liberty is placed too high on Breen 1-A for such an arrangement, while the better centering of the bust on Breen 2-A allows room for the letters in LIBERTY above the cap. One of the most difficult dates to obtain in the Capped Bust Eagle series, just 900 examples of Breen 1-A were struck. The mintage of Breen 1-B is even more minute, with only 842 pieces struck. Although Breen 1-A is not as great a rarity as its 7x6 Stars counterpart, it is nonetheless coveted in all grades. Most survivors are in XF and AU grades. The combined forces of NGC and PCGS have only encapsulated nine pieces as Mint State, several of which could represent duplicate submissions, and the present MS63 piece is the single finest certified by either major service.
