1798<$5> Small 8--Scratched, Cleaned--ANACS. AU Details, Net XF40. Breen-6431, B. 5-G, Miller-30, R.7. Misattributed by ANACS as Large 8, 13 Stars, this is in reality the even rarer Large Eagle, Small 8, Miller-30 variety. This is both a rare die pairing and an early die state for the obverse. The small 8 in the date and star 9 nearly touching the Y of LIBERTY confirm the obverse, but the only obverse die crack visible is one from star 1 through the hair curls, re-emerging from atop Liberty's cap and merging with the rim. Despite the presence of several obverse scratches, none of the later die cracks Miller mentions are visible. On the reverse the unusual star arrangement and several die cracks--one from the right (facing) shield point, upward through two stars and cloud 4 to the rim between S OF; another from that same shield point, through the eagle's right wing and the ribbon end, passing between AM in AMERICA; and a third (or a continuation of the first) running down from that shield point, through the olive branch and eagle's top claw to the right side of the last A in AMERICA and to the rim--confirm the reverse attribution. The A of STATES is obviously cut over something, likely an E, which is seen on other dies of the period. Unfortunately, there are two deep scratches in the right obverse field, and a thin scratch appears at the base of the reverse. The surfaces are unnaturally bright from having been cleaned. This is, nonetheless, a highly collectible and still-attractive example of this rare die pairing.
From The Steve Glenn Collection.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers.
