1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 14 Star Reverse M
1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 14 Star Reverse MS60 NGC. Breen-6427, B. 2-C, Miller-26, R.6. The elusive 14 Star 1798 Half Eagle was created when Tennessee entered the Union, the first state to do so after statehood was granted to the 13 original colonies. The updated reverse star arrangement was actually modified to the old style "arc" pattern. If time elapsed between auction appearances is an accurate barometer of rarity (which in this case it is), the last example of this elusive issue to be sold in a Heritage auction was in June, 1997, where an AU50 realized nearly $15,000. Offered here is the finest example yet certified by either major service. The yellow-gold surfaces are well defined with minor scuffiness in the obverse fields that impedes the luster on that side. Diagnostic die cracks are seen on the reverse, by far the most obvious being a curving rim-to-rim crack on the right side. A fleeting opportunity for the advanced early gold collector. Population: 1 in 60, 0 finer (11/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
