1798<$5> Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Star Reverse MS61 NGC. B. 2-D, Breen-6428, Miller-27, Bass-3055, R.3. The calendar year mintage for 1798 half eagles totaled 24,867 pieces, although many coins struck in each of the next two years probably included some that were dated 1798, although this is not known with certainty. At best, it is a difficult task to relate die varieties, emission sequences, and original delivery figures . It is common knowledge that a mintage figure for a given year does not necessarily represent coins bearing that date. This is simple to prove: in 1801 the U.S. Mint recorded production of 26,006 half eagles, yet not a single example is known with the 1801 date.
This is an important Mint State survivor that will appeal to a widely diverse audience including type, date, and variety collectors. This example is frosty in texture with an attractive green-gold appearance. The strike is irregular, being bold near the peripheries and soft over the central highpoints. Scattered abrasions limit the grade, but not the eye appeal of this Mint State early half eagle.
From The Antigo Collection.
