1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Star Reverse AU53 NGC
1798<$5> Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Star Reverse AU53 NGC. Breen-6429, B. 3-E, Miller-28, R.6. This rare die marriage is easily recognized by a die crack that bisects the obverse from 10 o'clock, where it runs from the rim through star 7, down through the back curls and across Liberty's drapery to re-emerge at the 8 in the date, near 5 o'clock. The Miller reference comments: "Obverse usually seen with engraver's scratch from the bottom of B through the left corner of E, into the field below R. This is usually mistaken for a die crack." That engraver's scratch is present on this coin. The four berries reverse shows three stripes in the shield and a crisscross arrangement of the stars above the eagle. This example shows pretty medium-gold surfaces that retain considerable mint luster, despite the light circulation wear. Some roughness is noted along the obverse rim from 1 to 3 o'clock, and correspondingly on the reverse. A couple of abrasions are noted on each side, one between the L and I in LIBERTY, and on the reverse at the eagle's tail feathers. The strike is pleasingly well executed, save for some localized softness on the hair above Liberty's ear and the eagle's neck.
From The Frank Schwerin Collection.
