1798<1C> Second Hair Style. S-173, B-38, R.3. XF40 NGC. VF25 EAC. Die State III. With this series of five high-grade S-173 coins in the present sale in Die States III through IX, numismatic researchers or advanced collectors have a unique opportunity to add to their reference materials, as well as to add a nice coin or two to their collections! Besides its status as a well-analyzed variety with nine different die states, the S-173 has a reverse that is a large cent classic for another reason: it was used to strike the 1799/8 NC-1 overdate, which was struck immediately afterward. Walter Breen's large cent Encyclopedia declares this Die State III of the S-173 simply "rare," and the present example is an eminent start to the group. The coin is a lovely, glossy chestnut-brown, with the obverse showing minimal marks under magnification. There are light clash marks visible beneath Liberty's chin, and there is a trace of a crack connecting RT. Perhaps because of imperfect centering, the Y merges with the rim and no crack is visible from the T to its top. Clash marks are seen on the reverse, to the left of ONE CENT. This coin is finely detailed, with sculpted hair and drapery elements. A trivial scratch before Liberty's chin and a nick on the bust are notable only because they are among so few distractions. The reverse, also intricately detailed, was struck from a die rotated about 45 degrees counterclockwise. Envelope Included.
