1798<1C> Second Hair Style. S-181, B-42, R.3. VF35 NGC. VF20 EAC. Die State II. This variety shares its obverse, characterized by a prominent bald spot on Liberty, with the S-180 variety. But here the reverse has a large fraction overpunched on shorter numerals and squeezed between the ribbon ends. This variety, in all die states, has a horizontal die crack beneath Liberty's ribbon and a second crack from the right rim to the drapery. In Die State I, a crack extends through the tops of LIBER. On this example the tops of LIBER are worn and merge with the rim while TY do not, but the crack is not visible. In Die State II, other faint die cracks appear. On this specimen from early in Die State II, the crack through the drapery has extended left toward the rim, but does not yet join it. But another hallmark of Die State II is conclusive: the horizontal crack has reached the round curl below the hair ribbon. Most of the new die cracks are faintly visible, a couple not at all. This coin has a smooth, olive-brown planchet and is pleasingly well detailed for the grade, but the bottoms of the date merge lightly with the rim. No significant marks reveal themselves under a glass, save for a scrape through the 1 in the fraction. The reverse die is rotated about 40 degrees counterclockwise. Appealing and collectible. Envelope Included.
