1798<1C> Second Hair Style. S-168, B-27, R.3--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. VF20 EAC. Die State II, which Walter Breen calls "not seen" in his Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents 1793-1814. Die State I's characteristics are a die crack that extends through UNITED STATES, not AMERICA. On the present example the break joining the tops (mostly) of UNITED STATES is clearly visible. A second short crack connects OF before terminating. A third break joins the tops of AMERI only, with no trace of continuation above CA. A light crack connects the 1 in the denominator with the left lower ribbon end and the U in UNITED. There is no sign of another crack that extends from the rim to U. Breen describes Die State III as "cracked through entire legend" and "another crack from the rim below left ribbon to top of U." This is clearly a rare die state, as Breen is known to have examined tens of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, of large cents during his life. The coin, struck on a dark-brown planchet, reveals numerous contact marks on Liberty's neck area under a glass, as well as some light porosity and die rust, the latter confined to the reverse.
Ex: George Ramont (3/4/1966). Envelope Included.
