1798<1C> Second Hair Style. S-180, B-41, High R.5--Corroded--NCS. VF Details. VG7 EAC. This interesting coin is almost certainly from Die State I, yet the surface condition prevents certainty. Despite omnipresent corrosion, there are no signs of the massive reverse rim breaks that characterize Die States II and higher. However, probably due to corrosion there are also no signs of the die cracks of Die State I, which Breen calls "extremely rare." In the large cent Encyclopedia, Breen speculates that there could be a "pre-Die State I state," since Die State I also features thin wreath stems from polishing and a reworked R that has a straight tail resembling Style I letters. Could this be coin predate State I? Not likely: the wreath stems are thin at the top, and the R does have a straight tail. So the good news is, this appears to be a High R.5 coin from an extremely rare die state. Despite corrosion this olive-brown coin retains a pleasing level of detail, stronger in the centers than at the peripheries.
Ex: Penn Valley (12/1/1966). Envelope Included.
