1798<1C> Second Hair Style. S-180, B-41, High R.5. Counterstamped S.ALEXANDER. VF30 NGC. VG10 EAC. Die State IV. According to Rulau and Brunk, Samuel Alexander was a goldsmith, silversmith, jeweler, and swordsmith who was active from 1797-1808. His place of business was located on South Second Street. This rare S-180 1798 large cent is counterstamped deeply into the center with a long, thin rectangle containing "S.ALEXANDER" in fine lettering. The style of the lettering is similar to the Style II lettering first used on the 1797 cents, with bold, broad serifs and a long foot on the R's. Although the deep stamping has obliterated central details on both sides, sufficient die markers remain to identify the coin as Die State IV, specifically a reverse crack joining the tops of UN. Struck on a glossy olive-brown planchet, well detailed and with a few grade-consistent contact marks. The bottoms of the digits in date merge with the border, as usual.
Ex: Richard Gross; Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz (5/12/1976); C. Douglas Smith; Dr. Philip W. Ralls; Jack H.
