Die chips at 7 and RT. Fraction bar slants down to right. The obverse appears on S-184 and S-185. The reverse appears on S-185.<BR><B><BR>Surfaces.</B></I> Glossy light olive and iridescent surfaces with horizontal and vertical hairlines in the fields. Plain Edge.<BR><B><BR>Die State V. </B></I>An intermediate die state with several obverse cracks and clash marks, and rim failure over ICA on the reverse.<BR><B><BR>Appearances. </B></I>The obverse and reverse are illustrated in Breen's <I>Large Cent Encyclopedia</B></I>.<BR><BR><B>Census. </B></I>The top six examples include four XF and several VF coins. The Husak coin is one of the two finest pieces in both lists.<BR><BR><B>Commentary. </B></I>Following a careful analysis of the various different obverse and reverse dies used for production of 1798 large cents, Walter Breen determined that S-185 was the last variety struck with the date.<BR><BR><B>Provenance. </B></I><I>T. Schuman; Superior (5/2003), lot 485, $4,600.</B></I><BR><BR><B>Personality. T. James Clarke</B></I> (1875-1952) operated a box and paper company in Jamestown, New York. He was an avid collector who purchased most of the Dr. George French collection from B. Max Mehl. He also collected paper money, stamps, and antique watches. Clarke was a primary source of the small cent boxes that were used by many contemporary collectors.
