1798<1C> Reverse of 1796. S-178, B-26, High R.5--Corroded--NCS. VG Details. AG3 EAC. There are actually three die varieties with this reverse type including the S-155 and S-156 with the first hair style, and this variety with the second hair style. This rare Reverse of 1796 coin is highly corroded, but the all-important single leaves are clear at the ends of the wreath. The vertical die crack ascending to the Y is visible, and the 1798 date and LIBERTY are fully readable. Although the surface condition prevents an exact die state determination, it appears to be Die State II, with a heavier crack from the rim rising to join the vertical crack. There is no sign of any "comet-like lump" that would signal Die State III. On the reverse STATES OF AMERI and ONE CENT are visible. The reverse appears once to have been coated or lacquered; about four small areas show a clear coating peeling off. Not a perfect coin by any means, but a classic rarity among the 1798 large cents. The extended Condition Census (graded according to EAC standards) for this variety in Breen's large cent Encyclopedia comprises 12 coins ranging from VF30 to G6, with only three coins surpassing Very Good.
Purchased 6/1968. Envelope Included.
