1798 1C Reverse of 1796--Corroded--NCS. AU Details. S- 1798[1C] Reverse of 1796--Corroded--NCS. AU D
1798<1C> Reverse of 1796--Corroded--NCS. AU Details. S-178. B-26, High R.5. Die State III. Misattributed as Reverse of 1795 on the NCS insert. All of the legends are visible, although weak on the first few letters of LIBERTY, and are especially bold on the reverse. A second crack through the date, parallel to the first, is indicative of a terminal die state. Several ancient scratches on the upper obverse blend in with Liberty's upper curls. In addition to being an elusive die marriage, S-178 is also notable as the lone 1798 variety pairing the second hair style with this reverse type. The only other Reverse of 1796 cents from this year, the S-155 and S-156, both exhibit the first hair style. This widely collected variety was discovered by James A. Walker in 1913, and was first published by Dr. Charles McGirk in his series prepared for The Numismatist. Even with the somewhat poor planchet quality that is nearly expected of the issue, this comparatively high grade representative easily merits Condition Census status on the extended census.
