1798<1C> First Hair Style. S-161, B-22, R.1--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. VF25 EAC. Die State II. This lovely coin seems to be in an intermediate die state, showing some but not all of the characteristics of Die State II, and others from Die State III as Walter Breen outlines in his large cent Encyclopedia. There are obverse crack marks on the drapery extending through the bust, but no diagonal crack is visible through the L in LIBERTY. There is a reverse crack from the loop of D that rises to the rim, with another faint crack that joins the bottom of D with the nearby leaf. A crack through AT continues to E, then rises to the rim and runs along it above the final S and the space before descending slightly toward the top of the O, where it terminates. There is no trace of a crack through UNITE, but bulging is beginning at STAT. Despite evidence of cleaning this coin has appealing, glossy medium-brown surfaces that are free of all but the most insignificant marks. The dentilation is full if imperfectly centered on both sides, and all devices show bold detail. The reverse die is rotated about 30 degrees counterclockwise. An appealing and interesting specimen.
Ex: Henry C. Hines; Stack's (10/1949), lot 224; Willard C. Blaisdell (2/8/1971). Envelope Included.
