1798<1C> First Hair Style. S-147, B-4, Low R.5--Obverse Scratched--NCS. VF Details. VG10 EAC. Die State I. The bottom of the R in LIBERTY touches the hair on this obverse of this scarce variety, while on the reverse STATES is punched off-kilter around the periphery. The dark-brown surfaces are rough on this coin, struck on a Coltman blank, but there do not appear to be any die cracks present that would signal Die State II. (The Breen large cent Encyclopedia notes a 1989 EAC lecture by Phil Ralls in which he called this variety, along with the S-149 and S-150, as "struck on lumps of bituminous coal.") A shallow obverse scratch runs from the top of Liberty's hair ribbon down to the top curl below, not all that distracting. The date is sharp, but LIBERTY is weak, while on the reverse the fraction and UNITED are weak. Still, this is a pleasingly detailed representative of this scarce variety, usually found in low grades.
Ex: Ray Chatham; Engelhardt (8/10/1959); John A.
