1798<10C> Large 8 MS65 NGC. JR-4, R.3. This variety is attributed by the flat topped 1 in the date, and 5 berries on the reverse branch. The JR-4 is the most frequently encountered of the four 1798 varieties, but it is still a scarce coin as only 27,550 dimes were produced with this date. Some have even theorized that because of the larger number of JR-4 dimes available from this year and the scarcity of 1800 dimes, this variety might actually have been produced in 1800. We see no convincing evidence for this, but it is an intriguing theory. JR-4 dimes are relatively obtainable above VF30 and they are even occasionally found in the lower grades of Mint State. However, this piece, at the MS65 level, is very likely the finest example known. Even if the single MS66 coin that has been certified is a JR-4 and the other two Gems are also this variety, then at worst this piece is tied with two others as second finest known. The obverse fields show evidence of heavy die striations, which have in turn imparted a brightness to that side of the coin. Nearly brilliant overall, there is just the slightest outline of toning around the devices. Well detailed on the strands of Liberty's hair, the strike otherwise is somewhat uneven, with some softness on the peripheral stars and in the center of the reverse.
