1798<10C> Large 8 MS64 NGC. JR-4, R.3. This variety is easily attributed by the flat topped 1 in the date, and 5 berries on the reverse branch. The JR-4 is the most frequently encountered of the four 1798 varieties, but it is still a scarce coin as only 27,550 dimes were produced with this date. Some have even theorized that because of the larger number of JR-4 dimes available from this year and the scarcity of 1800 dimes, this variety might actually have been produced in 1800. We see no convincing evidence for this, but it is an intriguing theory. JR-4 dimes are relatively obtainable above VF30 and they are even occasionally found in the lower grades of Mint State. However, this piece, at the MS64 level, is extremely difficult to locate. The obverse shows evidence of heavy die cracking in the right field. Richly toned overall, variegated shades of steel-blue, orange-rose, and aqua intermingle on each side. Well detailed on the strands of Liberty's hair, the strike otherwise is somewhat uneven, with some softness on the peripheral stars and in the center of the reverse. About 30 degrees of counterclockwise die rotation is noted. Census: 4 in 64, 1 finer (7/06).
