1798<10C> Large 8 MS64 NGC. JR-4, R.3. This variety is called Small 7, Medium 8 in the John Reich Society dimes reference. The 1 has a flat top. On the reverse the 13 stars are arranged 6-5-1-1 (counting the number of stars in each row from the top), and there are five berries on the left branch. The second T in STATES is slightly left of the center of cloud 3. This example shows deep lilac-gray toning on each side, with smatterings of electric blue. The usual die crack from the Y to the nose is prominent, as is that from the chin into the field toward star 13. On the reverse the die crack from the tip of the second feather of the left wing toward the rim is quite bold, and a retained cud has begun to form in that area. Some rim crumbling, again as usual, is seen over ES OF. This bold near-Gem is undoubtedly near the top of the Condition Census for this variety: Our auction records reveal only a single Gem specimen that we sold last year, and only a couple of Mint State specimens, both MS63, that we have offered in the last decade.
