Star counts for the early silver and gold coins jumped back and forth, with 13, 15, or 16 stars appearing on different coins in different years. There was even an early half eagle variety with 14 stars on the reverse die, as well as a couple later varieties that mistakenly had just 12 stars. The early silver dollars from 1794 through 1798 had 15 stars on the obverse, and from 1798 through 1803 (and 1804) had 13 obverse stars. The 1798 Small Eagle dollars were the transitional issue with varieties known to include both of these different obverse star counts.<BR> This is a lovely example of the 15 Stars variety with eight stars to the left and seven more to the right. Due to a constricted space, the stars at the right appear to be crowded together. The surfaces have pleasing grayish-brown color with some lighter and darker tones. The reverse is somewhat darker with grayish-brown and gold, accented by wisps of blue. The surfaces have light marks but no serious distractions. This is a wholesome and altogether pleasing example.
