1798 $1 Large Eagle XF40 NGC
1798 $1 Large Eagle XF40 NGC. B-15, BB-112, R.3. Bowers' Die State II. A fascinating coin that will appeal to the error enthusiasts as much as to the early dollar specialists. Stars 6 and 7, as well as LI in LIBERTY are absent on the obverse, with all but the first and last letters of UNITED on the reverse missing. Closer examination reveals that the planchet is out of round, with the vertical axis being slightly shorter than the horizontal axis. An additional flat spot is noted on the rim at 5 o'clock. It is obvious that the missing design details are the result of improper metal flow, but a conclusive determination can not be made until this coin is removed from its holder and examined more closely. Of particular interest is the weight of the coin and the details present--or absent--from the edge. One thing for certain is that the current coin was struck on a flawed planchet and the resulting anomaly is not to be confused with postmint damage. NGC agreed and certified this piece as XF40, an accurate determination in our opinion. Medium gray toning reveals subtle hues of rose and gold when viewed at various angles. A couple of small rim ticks on the reverse at 12 o'clock are the only problems that are worthy of mention.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
