1798 S$1 Five Stripes--Obverse Scratched, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Lines 10 Arrows. Ex: Jules Reiver Collection. B-6, BB-96, R.2. Comma shaped die flaw after date; Five vertical shield lines, 10 arrows. Reiver die state c. Bowers-Borckardt die state V. This is the Reiver plate coin for the obverse of this variety. Both the obverse and reverse show numerous tiny pin scratches when examined with a strong loupe, and there is minor verdigris near the center of the reverse. On the obverse we note a few nicks on Liberty's face and there are some surface pits in the field above Liberty's bust. The reverse die was lapped by the time this one was struck, disconnecting the upper berries from the branch. Starting to retone a bit toward a more natural silver gray color. Ever popular for the Knobbed 9 in the date, and the general scarcity of the variety.
This coin was purchased from the W. Earl Spies sale in 1974. At that time this was coin listed as a B-32, but it is really just a later lapped die state of 1798 B-6.
Ex: Stack's W.
