R.5. Die State IV. This very scarce variety was first described by Milferd Bolender in 1950, and was unknown to John Haseltine when he published his <I>Type Table</B></I> in 1881. It appears it was discovered sometime in the 1940s as Bolender had two examples in his February 1952 reference collection sale. Originally believed to be an R.7, a few more examples have been discovered in the past 50 years, and today it is rated as an R.5. This is a bright and still-lustrous coin that shows mottled light gray toning over each side. Sharply struck on the obverse, the reverse is somewhat irregularly defined with softness on the eagle's breast and the upper right portions of the stars, as always on this variety. The only distinguishing abrasions are a series of short marks on Liberty's cheek, just behind the mouth. This coin should fit comfortably in the Condition Census, the Notable Specimens in Bowers' reference on early dollars lists an AU55 as the finest known followed by an AU50. </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>02/23/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$4,600.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>09/28/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$5,175.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/31/2001</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$4,830.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/10/1998</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$3,105.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>06/04/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$7,130.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>07/30/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">ANACS</TD><TD width="33%">$7,475.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>09/25/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">ANACS</TD><TD width="33%">$3,335.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
