Bust Dollars 1797 Draped Bust. Small Eagle. Stars 9 + 7. Small Letters. Bolender-2. Rarity-4. Extremely Fine 40. In Extremely Fine 45 Accugrade holder. Marginal grade due to circulation wear, this piece has medium gray toning in the fields with lighter rubbed silver shade on the face and bust along with other high points. A tiny rim bruise, not worthy of calling a bump, below the bust tip. We direct your attention to an area of discoloration in the toning along the left-hand side of the reverse rim. The mint employed its largest screw press to coin dollars, gold eagles, and half dollars at this period. The process was primitive when compared to today's high-speed production presses. The device was hand operated by a (usually) burly individual who had to swing a heavy crossbar with bulbous iron weights at its ends, as pictured in a number of reference works on the Philadelphia Mint's coining practices. We suggest a glance through Donald Taxay's authoritative "The U.S. Mint and Coinage".
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
