1797 S-124 R5+ F15+At least 5 points sharper but a glass reveals extremely fine roughness under the glossy dark olive brown and steel toning. The roughness is most noticeable at the top and bottom of the reverse, but it is not strong and there is no verdigris. A small chip or nick in the field before the neck is the only notable mark. M-LDS, Breen state V, with obvious die clashmarks on the obverse and a bulge at the 97 through the bust. Graded VF35 net VF20 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 net F12 and tied for CC#2. This cent is clearly superior to the Breen plate coin, and it is graded F15. Either way this is an important example of a tough die variety.Certificate Number: Pedigree: Acquired unattributed in 7/1984 by Thomas E. Werner 8/1984-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
