1797 S-120a R3 PCGS graded AU58.
1797 S-120a R3. PCGS graded AU-58. Reverse of 1796 with Plain Edge. Lustrous light to medium steel brown with a couple tiny wisps of darker olive brown on the lower part of the reverse. There is a very light touch of wear on the highpoints of the obverse but the reverse appears very close to mint state. The only marks are a faint swipe of darker toning in the field left of the hair ribbon and a collection of microscopic pinpricks in the field above the bust tip. The dentils left of the date are softly struck, as are the opposing ones over the second T in STATES (all thanks to a minor thinness in the planchet at that spot). MDS, Breen state III. Called AU50 by Denis Loring and tied for CC#2. Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#5. A very attractive and important example of this popular "Redbook" type either way. Our grade is EF45. The attribution and Wells provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $10,000-UP. Ex 1957 ANA Sale, lot 8 31-C.
