1797 S$1 10x6 Stars VF35 NGC. B-3, BB-71, R.2. Die State III. Six stars right; leaf tip below center of E in STATES. This is the usual die state for the variety with both dies relapped. Deeply toned with golden-brown and steel color blended across the surface on each side. A few faint scratches are only visible with careful examination. Like other years, the determination of a proper emission sequence for the 1797 silver dollars is a nearly impossible task. This B-3 variety is the product of unique obverse and reverse dies, neither used in conjunction with any other silver dollar variety. The B-1 and B-2 varieties share a common obverse die, and the B-2 variety was clearly struck before B-1. Further, the B-1 variety is from a reverse die later used with a 1798 obverse. These are the facts that Dave Bowers relied on to place this B-3 die combination as the first 1797 silver dollar, probably struck before either the B-2 or B-1 die marriage, although it is impossible to know with certainty.
Ex: Dave Wnuck (1/2005).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)

Important notice:<
