<B>1797 S$1 10x6 Stars AU50 PCGS.</B></I> B-3, BB-71, R.2. Die State III. The arrangement of 10 stars on the left and six stars on the right is unique in the early dollar series. A small dot between 17 and 97 appears to punctuate the date. On the reverse, a leaf ends midway under the E in STATES.<BR> The die was apparently made after Tennessee joined the Union on June 1, 1796, and before the Mint decided to standardize on 13 stars, symbolizing the "original 13" colonies that banded together to form the United States. (Yet curiously, the single 1797-dated half dollar die has 15 stars, rather than the expected 16.) Although the mintage is given as 7,776 dollars, it is likely that most of them were dated 1796, and Bowers guesses that the number of 1797-dated dollars, likely struck in 1798, was as high as 60,000 pieces.<BR> This piece offers medium silver-gray surfaces with just a few light contact marks, none in the least distracting, save for a single pinscratch running from the top curl below the ribbon through the left obverse field to star 4.
