Lustrous medium brown with hints of very faded mint color in protected areas, mostly near the dentils on both sides. The surfaces are smooth and quite attractive, the only notable defect being a very small spot of fine carbon inside the top of the E in CENT. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state III. There are microscopic planchet chips showing on both sides, as always, where traces of the ever-present planchet flakes and flaws didn't completely strike out, but overall this example is well above average. Most likely from the famous Nichols Hoard of mint state 1796 and 1797 cents obtained directly from the mint and dispersed long ago. EAC grade MS62+, close to MS63. A sharp, very attractive early large cent.
