1797 L1C S-126 R3 VF25. Double Struck.
Sharpness near AU50 with patches of fine porosity and tiny pitmarks scattered about both sides, mostly on the reverse. The largest pitmark is a rather small one hidden in the hair near the forehead and the notable patches of roughness are at the first A and RI in AMERICA. Mostly glossy medium brown and chocolate with speckles of dark olive and small splashes of reddish chocolate. Sharply struck EDS, Breen state II. Boldly double struck. The first impression was centered on the planchet while the second was 10% off center to K-11.5. The second date is bold, as is the lower half of the first, and much of the undertype remains clear as well. A dramatic example of a double-struck large cent, and plated on page 843 in Breen's "Oops" chapter of his book on early cents to illustrate this type of mint error.
