1797<H10C> V-2, LM-1, R.3. 15 Stars--Damaged--NCS. VF Details. Reiver state b. The damage consists of some dull marks on both sides, the worst one just below Liberty's ribbon knot, a few others above her bust in the field, plus another few marks on the reverse, one knocking the eagle's head. One result of the damage is uneven wear on the devices. The surfaces are slightly porous, and this coin may have been buried or damaged by an acid bath at some point. There is a planchet crack from the rim to Liberty's bust which continues through to the reverse as well. Slightly uneven wear with the Y of LIBERTY faint at the base and there are some light file lines on the rims and a few devices. While not the prettiest little half dime, the devices are all clear and the important central devices retain enough detail to study the variety. Middle die state with the die crack to Liberty's bust and up her face, but lacking the die crack through the 9. On the reverse the usual crack through the first E to the leaf is present. This coin probably won't bring a lot of money, but symbolically presents the collector with an interesting die state with die cracks on both sides, a planchet crack representing the struggles of the initial years at the Philadelphia Mint and problems refining and rolling out planchets, and the nicks that represent hard circulation and the cleaning recalls the usual attempts at improving a coin to make more marketable. Certainly a lot of history is included for such a tiny coin.
Ex: Edwards (September, 1992). Envelope Included.
