 1797 H10C 16 Stars AU55 PCGS. V-3, LM-3
<B>1797<H10C> 16 Stars AU55 PCGS.</B></I> V-3, LM-3, R.5. The second-rarest of four die pairings known for the date. Three different stars counts are found on 1797 half dimes: 15, 16, and 13 stars. The addition of Tennessee to the Union as the 16th state led to the V-2 and V-3 varieties. Mint policy was changed to return to 13 stars, reflecting the original colonies, since the small periphery of the half dime was becoming crowded with stars. This medium golden-gray example displays substantial luster within Liberty's hair and the eagle's wings. The leaves, legends, and stars also retain pleasing mint glimmer. The strike is a bit soft on the eagle's head, characteristic of the Small Eagle type across all silver denominations, since the head is opposite the comparatively high relief shoulder of Liberty. The surfaces are unblemished, and wear is limited to the eagle's breast and other highpoints.
