<B>1797<H10C> 16 Stars AU55 PCGS.</B></I> V-3, LM-3, R.5. Lovely orange-russet toning enriches the borders, while the lighter centers are gunmetal-gray. Well struck aside from the eagle's head and the upper right portion of the wreath. The eagle's breast and Liberty's drapery show slight wear, as expected of the grade. Both sides exhibit light clashmarks, and a small number of minor marks on the portrait are unworthy of individual description. A pair of brief die cracks journey from the rim to star 8. Three different star counts were in use for the 1797 half dime. The addition of Tennessee to the union led to the 16 Stars variety. Mint policy was then changed to only use 13 stars, which represent the original colonies, to prevent crowding of the obverse die. Population: 6 in 55, 14 finer (9/06).
