1797<H10C> 15 Stars AU55 PCGS. V-2, LM-1, R.3. Both 7's in the date are small, with eight stars left and seven right. As the only 15-star obverse, this variety merits a separate Guide Book entry. The Logan-McCloskey Reverse C is distinguished by the outer berry between N and I in UNITED. This is the most common die marriage of the year, and the most often seen in Mint State.
The obverse of this lovely and lustrous Choice AU example features rich iridescent amber, russet, and aqua toning, heavier near the peripheries, while the reverse is a rich silver-gray with a dab of russet near the border at 3 o'clock. Considerable mint luster remains. A small reverse scratch proceeds from the upper left (facing) leaf tip through the O of OF, and a few light scrapes are seen on Liberty's face, all only under a loupe. The strike is sharp on the upper and back curls of Liberty and on the ribbon and the right wing of the eagle, but soft on the lower curls and the eagle's body and wings. The strike quality is typical of this issue, as few are found with much central definition. Population: 15 in 55, 26 finer (4/06).
