1797<H10C> 15 Stars AU53 NGC. V-2, LM-1, R.3. There are four different varieties of 1797 Half Dimes currently known, with three different star counts on the obverse. This is the only variety with 15 obverse stars. The obverse die is shattered with a crack from the rim to star 2, and another from the rim to drapery, bust, neck, cheek, forehead, and upright of T to the rim. An additional obverse crack from the rim curves up through the digit 9 and the drapery, joining the bisecting crack on Liberty's bust. The reverse is cracked through E1 to a leaf, and has a small rim break in the dentils over ME. This is not a rare variety, but it is rarely seen in such nice quality. The central obverse and reverse are weak as always, with a few minor scratches on the eagle's body. Surfaces have splendid lilac and blue toning with lighter silver color on the highpoints.
Ex: Ezra Cole Collection (Bowers and Merena, 1/1986), lot 2872.
From The William A.
