1797 Draped Bust Half Dollar PCGS VF30
Overton-101. Middle die state with cracks on reverse not as extensive as they later become on O-101a. This opportunity is extremely vital to the specialist or the serious Type collector. The draped bust, small eagle half dollar design type was only produced in 1796 and 1797. A total of four die varieties are known for the two years. From these four die pairs, a total of 3,918 coins were produced. Today, it is believed that the 1796 15 Stars variety is the most common, followed by this 1797 O-101 half dollar. The 1796 16 Stars is next in the rarity lineup, and the 1797 O-102 is clearly the rarest. There may be as few as 200 to 250 known of all four varieties. Such a low census is in line with the opinions of half dollar variety specialists who have labeled each of these varieties as Rarity-5.

This splendid half dollar has light silvery-gray at the centers of each side. The obverse has ample detail in Liberty's hair, a nice drapery separated from her shoulder, rim denticles present throughout 360 degrees of the circle, and the surfaces are very choice. The reverse is, to use a now fading metaphor in the computer age, a carbon copy with the same careful preservation and strike characteristics, the same beautiful hazy silver-gray color. None of the usual heavy adjustment marks. Taking stock of everything, then, we can say categorically that you should, you really should, be considering this 1797 half dollar if your budget allows and your desires to own such a coin are as heightened by its beauty and originality as we think they will be!
