1797 Draped Bust Cent. Plain edge. AG3
The obverse is closer to G4 while the reverse is weaker, as usual, showing no more than a third of the details including STATES OF and portions of the wreath and fraction. The single leaf feature at the top of the wreath is clear though not strong, as are the date and nearly all of LIBERTY. The surfaces are not perfectly smooth, but the minor roughness appears to be caused by nicks rather than any corrosion. There are no traces of grip marks on the edge. (Note: Breen explains that the so-called "plain edge" version is actually a partially beaded edge without any incuse grip marks. See the discussion on page 379 of his large cent encyclopedia.) Rather glossy steel and light olive brown. Noyes photo #39448. This cent was included in the "grading challenge" at the 2005 EAC Convention in Annapolis. The grade assigned to this cent by all EAC graders who participated in the exercise was AG3.
Doug Bird 11/00-Mike Iatesta.
