1797 Bust H10C. 16 Stars NGC MS62
1797 Draped Bust Half Dime. 16 stars. NGC graded LM-2, Valentine-4. MS62. Encased in NGC holder 1828671-002. An elevated degree of pewter-gray toned luster springs to life beneath choice lustrous highlights on this scarce Mint State survivor from the year 1797. Somewhat yielding at the reverse as always, where the eagle shows mainly an outline rather than much of any detail, though much more detail can be found on Liberty than on the typical example of the date or variety. Any draped bust, small eagle half dime in Mint quality brings out expressions of wonder in the eyes of a true numismatist, since these rarely get offered. And once they do appear for sale, they just as quickly return to hiding in a coin collection, rarely to show up again for many years. NGC Pop: 3/2 for the LM-2 die variety, putting it squarely within the Condition Census.

This is one of two varieties with 16 obverse stars. LM-2 has a leaf piercing the bottom of C at its center. The other 16 stars variety has a leaf close to the bottom of this letter but not touching. The final 7 in the date is larger than the other digits, and it is broken at the junction of the upright and top. The obverse has parallel cracks from the border to stars 7 and 8, the lower crack continuing into the field between these stars, the upper crack joining the upper outside point of star 8. The reverse has a small rim break in the dentils over ME. Clash marks are visible on both sides (PCGS # 4259)
