1797 50C --Rim Filed, Cleaned, Tooled--ANACS. XF40 Details. O-101a, High R.4. Perhaps no other United States type coin draws as much attention in a public auction sale as the low-mintage Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar (3,918 pieces), carrying the date 1796 or 1797. No type set can be considered complete without the inclusion of this classic rarity. Consequently, it has seen a significant increase in prices realized at auction over the last three or four years, as type-set collectors, as well as date and variety specialists, put enormous pricing pressure on surviving examples in all grades. With the survival rate of this two-year type coin likely to number fewer than 300 pieces, it is not surprising that even low-grade specimens, as well as those with impairments, are in strong demand. A 1797 NGC Good 6 half dollar, for example, recently sold for $34,500 in our January 2007 FUN Sale, and a 1797 NCS Fine Details, labeled "Scratched" specimen realized $43,125 in the same sale.
The XF40 Details example presented in this lot is the later die state of the Overton-101 variety, characterized by the plethora of die cracks on the reverse, and the solitary obverse crack from the rim through star 2 to Liberty's curl. The fields and the interstices of the devices display even gunmetal-gray patination that highlights the silver-gray highpoints. The design elements are perfectly centered on the planchet, and the dentilation is complete and bold on both obverse and reverse. Liberty's hair strands are sharply defined, as is the plumage on the eagle's wings and tail. No adjustment marks are seen on either side. Rim filing is not evident within the confines of the holder, and close examination reveals no significant cleaning hairlines. What appear to be light erasure marks occur over portions of the reverse, and 10 or so small oval-like marks on and around the eagle's torso will help to pedigree the coin. A few unobtrusive, shallow scratches are visible at the CA of AMERICA.
In summary, this is a respectable example of the most coveted type coin in American numismatics. The ANACS disclaimers should not intimidate those bidders seeking to complete their type or early half dollar collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
