1797<50C>--Bent, Damaged--NCS. VG Details. O-101a, High R.4. The Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar, bearing the dates 1796 and 1797, is comprised of four varieties. The 1796 with 15 stars is Overton 101, and that with 16 stars is Overton 102. A 1797 obverse die was paired with the reverse used on the 1796 issues, and is designated Overton 101. Over time, this reverse developed myriad die cracks (Overton 101a). A new reverse die, identified by slight differences in the alignment of the wreath relative to the peripheral lettering, was then paired with the 1797 obverse (Overton 102).
The Overton 101a example in this lot displays the typically-seen die cracks (including the obverse crack that travels from the rim through star 2 to Liberty's curl), except where they are worn away. The crack connecting the bottoms of ST in STATES, another extending from the lower upright of the first T through a leaf to the eagle's neck, and one traveling from the rim just right of the last S in STATES to two leaves below, are all visible. Both sides display semi-bright silver-gray surfaces that show slighter darker color in some of the protected areas. Uneven wear results from the coin having been slightly bent. Actually, the design elements exhibit fairly strong detail on Liberty's upper facial features, on the flowing ribbon and hair curls beneath, on the 17_7 of the date, on the stars along the left border, and on the ERTY of LIBERTY. On the reverse, most of the eagle shows, except for its right (left facing) wing, as does the bowknot and fraction below, and the letters UNIT, all of STATES, and the letters AME. A few small punches are scattered about, especially on the obverse, and a noticeable scratch extends from the rim above star 1 through the lower curls. A few thin, relatively unobtrusive pinscratches are also noted on each side.
That this piece of Americana has its share of problems is undeniable. Regardless, 1796-1797 halves in all grades, and with or without

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers.
