1797 1C Triple Flipover Strike, XF45 PCGS.
1797 1C Reverse of 1797, Stems--Triple Flipover Strike--XF45 PCGS. S-138, B-20, R.1. While double struck early date large cents are occasionally encountered, pieces that are triple struck can only be classified as extremely rare. When the triple strike includes a flipover, not only is the piece extremely rare, but it also presents a spectacular appearance. Substantial detail can be seen from all three strikes, including three completely visible dates. One is in the normal obverse position, another is intertwined with D ST on the reverse, and the third can be seen at the top of the left branch of the wreath below ATE.
In addition to its remarkable appeal as a major large cent error, it is an excellent quality piece with smooth mahogany fields and lighter brown devices. This identical specimen served as the plate coin on page 844 of Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States Large Cents to illustrate a triple strike. EAC 30.
Note: PCGS incorrectly assigned their coin number 1425 (No Stems) to this piece.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
