1797<1C> Reverse of 1797, Stems. S-138, B-20, R.1--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. VG10 EAC. Die State III. A intermediate die state, with an obverse crack running from the Y in LIBERTY down faintly into the obverse field. There is pronounced die bulging at S OF A, and heavy rim breaks over U, N, IT, and the fraction. Prominently doubled at lower left obverse and even more boldly at upper left reverse. The doubling is most striking on the obverse periphery at the date, lower dentils, back curls, and the ends of the hair ribbon. On the reverse ITED STATES is boldly doubled, with the left-side leaves less so. The first and second strikes at STATES are rotated by about the width of the upright of T. This type of doubled strike is possible when the planchet rotates slightly on an off-center "pivot point" between strikes. This medium-brown coin shows some lighter hints of red on the obverse, with light porosity on either side. It is well detailed and reveals few mentionable distractions under a glass. An attractive coin, and one that the error makes doubly so!
Ex: Robert Batchelder (10/19/1966). Envelope Included.
